Today, we interview a good friend of mine AJ Maestas, who is the President of Navigate Marketing, an up and coming research firm here in the Chicago. AJ is incredibly talented and networked - one of the most that I know. If I need someone to talk to, AJ usually can help me through his vast network of relationships.
However, today, we're focusing on him and what he does for a living. Also, visit his webpage at www.navigatemarketing.com to learn more.
Where did you go to school and what did you major in (include if you received an advanced degree)
BA University of Washington – Finance, MBA Arizona State University – Sports Business
What is your current position and key responsibilities?
President, Navigate Marketing…Sales and customer service
How long have you been at your current position?
3 years
When you got out of college, do you think the position you are in current is where you would be in today? Why/Why not?
Of course not….I wanted to make money at out school, I my priorities were in the wrong place.
Who was instrumental to your success path and why?
Too many to name, but others more than myself to be honest…I guess that says something about networking in sports or at least those who have been mentors to me.
If you were just getting out of school or changing careers, what would you tell people to do first? Never to do?
Find what you are passionate about first, have skills at second and stay the course. Don’t start a career path for the wrong reasons, you only live once.
After working in this business, what is one truth that you'd share with others? What is one fallacy?
Relationships matter, never burn a bridge, follow up and treat everyone as best you can.
If you weren't doing what you are doing now, what would you be doing?
That scares me to think about….next question
If you were given two months off with full pay and could go anywhere or do anything, what would you be doing?
I am a beach person, but I would have to be active….I would love to travel the world so I would probably make up for missing out on the post college backpacking trip.
If you could be the best in anything, what would it be?
I tried to find that in my career, but I realize that I am not the best. It would be something more personal like finding happiness with friends and family. That is too cheesy to put on your blog, sorry Steve.
What do you think is the next greatest thing?
GPS guided cars, I want someone or something to drive for me
What is the coolest thing you've done in your career to date?
Starting a business, it is scary, fun, rewarding and so much more….
If had an extra ticket to an upcoming Hanna Montana concert, who would you give it to and why?
You Steve, or someone with kids…
Thanks AJ. I'll make sure to take you up on that offer.
Have a great week people!
